The civilization project

These six paintings began with a page in my sketchbook dated July 24, 2014 where I made a list of six things to worry about. I already knew that most things people worry about were not worth the mental energy involved, but I thought maybe these six big things that could take down a civilization might be worth a little thought. And by thought, I mean painting.

Each painting starts with a portrait of the actor, Jeff Goldblum, a still from a scene in a movie he was in, where the line he is saying at the moment of the portrait is the title of the painting, and a clue to it's meaning. For example, "Life finds a way." is what Jeff Goldblum's character says in the movie Jurassic Park, and this relates to Pandemic. Floating around the portrait are 10 smaller paintings that may visually stimulate a viewer to ask questions about the topic.

These paintings are complex and crazy, just like civilization.
